Demand Response
Millions of Direct Control Units (DCU’s) have been deployed by Utilities throughout the United States. Regardless of the brand, most DCU’s work well and are activated wirelessly via 900MHz, VHF or UHF paging networks. Many Utilities contract commercially to provide cheap and reliable service with ubiquitous wide-area network coverage offered by a variety of competing paging carriers. Those days are over and large Demand Response programs are at risk.

Paging technology is solid and works great – it’s the paging industry. The commercial paging industry lost 90% of its customers since 2000 and is in a state of prolonged collapse dropping an average of 15% annually. For example, 13 carriers offered service in Chicago in 1998. Today, there are three. To remain viable, Paging carriers are forced to make drastic cuts in network coverage. This is especially true for rural markets as coverage for sparsely populated areas are the first to go.
