Narrowbanding Direct Load Control Programs
The FCC requires Part 90 licensees in the VHF & UHF bands to convert their networks to narrowband operation by January 1, 2013. Failure to do so could result in fines and/or loss of license.
Risks of Narrowbanding to Utility DLC Programs include:
- Complete loss of network through non-compliance.
- Reduction of effective coverage area resulting in stranded switches.
- Wideband switches that are unable to respond to Narrowband commands.
Narrowbanding is both an opportunity and a challenge. Complying with the FCC’s mandatory requirement can be a complex and time consuming process that can affect both broadcast (network) and receive (switches) program capabilities. However, Narrowbanding does present opportunities to update aging, decades-old network infrastructures with modern, reliable components – making your program function better than ever.
Are your network transmitters capable of broadcasting in Narrowband? How will network coverage be affected by Narrowband? Will currently deployed switches / DCU’s function properly in a Narrowband environment - Do they need to be replaced? Will converting to digital protocols help?
A Narrowband Study from RF Demand Solutions will answer these questions and position you to formulate an appropriate action plan. We’ll evaluate your network infrastructure, create predictive Narrowband coverage mapping, evaluate your existing switch/DCU Narrowband capabilities, and recommend infrastructure and other upgrades as required.
We are uniquely positioned to help you since Direct Load Control programs are our focus. Click here to contact us.
